The Med Grill - Victoria, BC

We went to the Med Grill on recommendation from our B&B hosts. It was pretty crowded for a Sunday night, but it was a Sunday before a holiday so I guess that explains it. Our host said they had a prefix menu. Usually that means you have at most 3 or so entrees to chose from, however when we called them they said there were 11 choices. What they really meant to say is that they offered a 4 course meal for reduced size and price. The price was pretty good $17 for it. Now I didn't expect that much food, but it was funny how they served the first two on little plates. The antipasto was a bruchetta with roasted garlic.

I chose the house salad and David had the thai peanut salad. Both were pretty good, but as usual too much salad dressing. Sigh.

David had the Hake(white fish) and I ate the chicken Spaetzle. The fish was okay, nothing special with a cream sauce atop. The spaetzle was pretty tasty. Although I think there was probably a hell of a lot of oil to make it taste that way.

For dessert I had a chocolate cream and David had chocolate moose. Basically the chocolate cream was like a dark chocolate creme brule and the moose was a light version. Both were quite good.

The service was krap. We complained and the waitress blamed it on the kitchen. Didn't get much but a free dessert next time. . .Grr. Oh well, we weren't in a rush so it wasn't a big deal.

I wanted to take my loving husband out to Med Grill cause he's wonderful:) Alas, something has happened since last Christmas (our last time there). I'm picky and critical, yes. I can also appreciate fine dining at its best. Med has alot of potential but here are my (critical!) thoughts on tonight. It wasn't as good as last time, by a country mile.
Strike 1: The lights were too low to read the menu comfortably, and therefore to judge the dishes' visual aspects with objectivity. I did see that they like the art of pretty plating.
Strike 2: Dave's fountain glass had 2 chips in the rim; no garnish as previously.
Strike 3:Dave ordered the 6 oz. beef burger. He said: Too salty like way too salty.
Save 1: BUT the fries were great.
Strike 4: My zucchini/crab antipasto was wonderful, but 5 grams of food? C'mon.
Save 2: The Beet Carpaccio salad was blended well, dressed well, presented well and proportioned well.
Strike 5: The Cranberry and Brie stuffed chicken. Had to send the chicken back- couldn't tell if it was done as bone didn't separate easily from meat; too dark to tell by sight. Kitchen re-plated it to make it pretty and said it was done.
Save 3: The mashed spuds next to the chicken were perfect, along with the broccoli and carrot. Draw: Yes, just one carrot.
Strike 4: The stuffing? You know. The one where it had cranberries and brie? Where was it? I think I got a 5 second burst of brie at best. And why did they try to stuff a bone-in cut?

I thought after all that, dessert has to be a save. Pumpkin custard martini. Tasted wonderful: real whipped cream, and old country crumble blanketing a mousse like custard. Until I got halfway down the custard. Water! Someone forgot to tell them custard settles if pre-portioned in small glasses and refer'd for 3 or 4 hours. Bind or emulsify if you must, for your pretty little martini desserts. But for the love of god!- Next to bad fish: bad custard.
So um that's a strike 5.

Save 3: Service was prompt on walk-in, courteous, groomed well, and in good supply.
